BROADCAST OF REPUBLIC OF IRELAND v ITALY

TG4 has confirmed that it will broadcast full deferred coverage of the Republic of Ireland v Italy soccer match next Tuesday night, 7th June. Giovanni Trapattoni’s Boys in Green face the Azzurri in an international friendly in Stade Maurice Dufrasne, Liege, Belgium. TG4’s full deferred coverage will begin at 10:30pm with commentary by Seán Bán Breathnach.

The game against Cesare Prandelli’s team will be hosted in Standard Liege’s home ground as Giovanni Trapattoni’s charges take on his home country. The match will follow Ireland’s crucial Euro 2012 qualifier in Macedonia at the weekend.

The Republic of Ireland will be full of confidence after winning the inaugural Carling Nations Cup last Sunday afternoon. In beating Scotland in Dublin for the first time in 48 years, the Irishmen also preserved their impeccable record in this round robin Carling series. The Republic won all three matches (beating Northern Ireland and Wales also) and fans will be particularly pleased that the team went through the tournament without conceding a goal. Robbie Keane's 23rd-minute strike was all Ireland needed to overcome Scotland at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday and brought the Republic of Ireland’s 25-year wait for a trophy to an end.

Soccer fans will have fond memories of previous encounters involving the Republic of Ireland and Italy, in particular the famous match at the Giants Stadium in New York in June 1994 during the World Cup when Ray Houghton scored the winning goal. The sides last met during the World Cup 2010 qualification process - a 1-1 draw in Bari and a 2-2 classic at Croke Park.
