Rabo Direct Pro 12 coverage is season’s best on any tv channel
Friday’s live coverage of the RaboDirect Pro 12 match between Leinster and Munster at the AVIVA stadium pulled in TG4’s highest audience ratings ever for a rugby match. The official Nielsen figures report that 635,000 people tuned in to the TG4 coverage with the audience for the match peaking at 338,000 viewers towards the end of the game as Leinster recorded a win over Munster in the first clash this season between the two giants of Irish and European rugby.
An average of 183,000 viewers watched the entire match, making it the most watched RaboDirect Pro 12 televised match so far this season, beating previous best; the 129,000 figure for the match between Cardiff Blues and Munster televised live on RTÉ Two on September 23rd. Boosted also by coverage of the second International Rules test match (Australia v Ireland) played earlier in the day (which reached an audience of 450,000 viewers with an audience share of 17%), TG4 was the third most popular channel in Ireland last Friday.
It is worth noting that the Nielsen systems only measures domestic viewership of television and does not include those watching in pubs, clubs etc or those accessing the coverage on the TG4 Player (www.tg4.tv).
TG4 Ardstiúrthóir Pól Ó Gallchóir said he was very pleased with Friday’s viewing figures. “We always knew that Leinster v Munster would be a very attractive fixture in the schedule but the television audience for these sports events and our audience share on Friday last has exceeded our expectations,” he said. “One million people tuned into TG4 on the day and we’ve also been gratified by the feedback from the audience praising the quality of the coverage.”
