TG4 has taken the main award at the Celtic Media Festival 2012 in Derry. Corp + Anam took the Spirit of the Festival, the Festival’s main prize, announced at the closing awards ceremony at the weekend. The series had earlier taken the Drama Series Award at the Festival.
Corp + Anam, produced for TG4 by the Galway-based independent production company, Magamedia, is a hard-hitting and topical drama that chronicles the complex life of TV crime correspondent Cathal Mac Iarnáin (Diarmuid de Faoite) who will stop at nothing to dig out the truth, regardless of who gets hurt, including his own family. It also stars Maria Doyle-Kennedy. The four-part Irish language drama was filmed in the west of Ireland and was part-funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and the Irish Film Board. The series has previously won a number of prizes and writer/director Darach Mac Con Iomaire was in Derry to accept the two CMF awards.
The Celtic Media Festival is one of the most prestigious and long established festivals in these islands and is held each year. It presents awards in a range of programme categories. Entries go through a national pre-selection phase in each of the Celtic countries with the best advancing to compete at in the international phase with awards are announced at the annual Festival. TG4 had eight programmes shortlisted in various categories in this year’s Festival, held in Derry. The Spirit of the Festival Award is the most-coveted of all the awards and is given to the best programme in a Celtic language.
TG4 Director-General, Pól Ó Gallchóir said that prizes such as the Celtic are of particular importance for the Irish channel. “It is gratifying to see our programmes standing up to competition from the best from Scotland, Wales and indeed Ireland “Awards like these reaffirm our conviction that quality will travel well and appeal to a wide audience, irrespective of language. Accolades such as these from an international jury of fellow professionals are the highest praise of all,” he said.
