TG4’s Christmas treats 2015

Music, live sport along with nostalgic & intriguing documentaries are among the festive treats on TG4 this Christmas

TG4’s Christmas schedule has plenty of treats this season offering a wide variety of goodies from brand new documentaries such as Robert ShawJaws a revealing documentary about the celebrated actor who made Tourmakeady in Mayo his home and Deoch an Dorais which tells the story of Mike Malloy. During the prohibition era in New York this Donegal man became known as the Rasputin of the Bronx because he survived over 20 attempts on his life in 1933.

Filmed over the course of eight years, I mBéal na Stoirme, tells the story of a small fisherman who puts himself, as ‘David against Goliath’, in the heart of the new reform of the Common Fisheries in Brussels, to try to understand and change the system that took everything from him.. Bocsáil i mBoston follows the boxers from the Connemara Boxing club as they take part in a boxing tournament in Boston hosted by Marty Walsh. Tír Tairngire tells the story of how Cromwell banished many of the Gaels living in the eastern part of Ireland to Connacht.

We look at the influence of musician Matt Cunningham on Irish céilí music in Matt Cunningham – Rí na Seite. Matt is joined by Kieran Hanrahan who has worked with Matt on numerous occasions over the years and Philomena Begley who shares a song and recounts with great fondness the times she played with Matt in the UK.

TG4’s Ros na Rún’s touching tribute episode to Séamus Mhicil Tom, the Irish language soap’s loveable rogue, played by the late actor Diarmuid Mac an Adhastair airs on Wednesday the 23rd.

Many Irish country music stars feature on TG4 this Christmas including Daniel O’Donnell, Nathan Carter and Robert Mizzell. Brendan Shine celebrates 50 years in the business, in Brendan Shine@50 on New Year’s Eve.

An Klondike an Scannán is a feature length version of the popular drama series that tells the story of the Connolly Brothers; three Irish emigrants who travel from Montana to the Yukon.

Top class traditional music comes to us on Christmas Day from Kinvarra and features many of Ireland’s finest musicians such as Máirtín O’Connor, Cathal Hayden, Gary Ó Brian, Chris and Cathal Droney, singer Bríd Ní Mhaoilchiaráin, Pat Shortt and Declan O’Rourke in Hup.  

Moya Brennan ag Ceol features the internationally renowned singer and musician as she joins family and friends to play for an invited audience in an Cultúrlann in Dublin. We also have Seán Keane ag Ceol where the renowned singer Seán Keane is joined by friends in a special concert for an invited audience in Paddy Coyne’s Pub, in Connemara’s Tullycross. Sailing to an Island sees Dolores Keane and John Faulkner head to Inisbofin for a fund-raising concert.

Sporting events have kept us enthralled for the past twelve months and over Christmas you have another chance to see some of these major events like both hurling and football All-Ireland finals. There’s live coverage of Connacht v Ulster from the Sportsground in the 10th round of the PRO12 on St. Stephens Day and Munster v Leinster from Thomond Park on the 27th and Leinster v Connacht from the RDS on New Year’s Day.

A range of films from classics to Westerns to contemporary international cinema. Among these are Father of the Bride, Guilty by Suspicion, Rock of Ages, Meet the Parents, Fantastic Mr. Fox, A Cinderella Story, The Big Tease, The Yearling, Cloud Atlas and Space Cowboys. Movies for younger viewers as Gaeilge include Niko The Flight Before Christmas, Secret of Kells and Happy Feet. We also have some Christmas specials that children will find entertaining. These include An Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, Q Pootle na Nollag, Saol faoi Shráid na Nollag, Abominable Christmas, The Naughty List and Laura’s Star.
