TG4 Welcomes Significant Funding Boost of €5.4m in Budget 2026

07.10.25

Deirdre Ní Choistín, Ard-Stiúrthóir TG4

TG4 welcomes the significant increase in its annual grant for 2026 from Government announced in today’s budget.

The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport has sanctioned €5.4m or a 9% increase from the exchequer for TG4 next year for more high-quality Irish language content, children’s programming and expanded news services bringing its total funding to €65.4m.

This is the second highest increase for TG4 in recent years. €7.3m was awarded to the station in budget 2023 to launch new children’s channel Cúla4.

TG4 Director General Deirdre Ní Choistín welcomed today’s announcement saying, “I am deeply grateful to Minister O’Donovan, his officials in the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, and to the new Government for their generous support of TG4 for 2026 and in particular the recognition for expanded news services for TG4. We were pleased to welcome Minister O’Donovan to TG4’s headquarters in Baile na hAbhann during the Summer, not long after he had taken office. We are appreciative of his interest in TG4’s strategic priorities, the work being done in TG4 and the development of the independent production sector by TG4 and Government supports.

TG4 is going from strength to strength due to increased investment from government in recent years. Our audience has grown steadily as a result of this investment. To date this year, TG4’s audience share is now at 2.3%. We hope to continue to build on our audience engagement in 2026 and provide high-quality content for our audiences on all platforms.

This investment as we approach thirty years on air demonstrates the Minister’s confidence in the TG4 team, the TG4 Board and in the value of TG4 as an Irish language public service media provider and the importance of the work we do for the Irish language and Irish language communities around the world.”

Note: TG4 expects to receive further details later (17:00) today from Minister O’Donovan.
