A powerful new TG4 documentary, Plant the Planet – GAA in Uganda, explores the global reach of the GAA and the unifying power of sport, culture, and community across continents.
 

Set against the vibrant backdrop of Uganda, the programme follows a group of inter-county Gaelic players who travel to East Africa for a transformative week-long initiative. Their mission is twofold: to support environmental sustainability through the planting of one million trees and to strengthen the growing GAA community in the region.
 

At the heart of the documentary is the inspiring story of the Simba Wolfhounds, a Ugandan club that has embraced Gaelic Games as its own. Through their journey, the visiting players witness first-hand how the core values of the GAA, community, pride and inclusivity, transcend borders and resonate deeply within new cultures.
 

A landmark moment captured in the documentary is the construction of Uganda’s first-ever handball court, introducing the sport to more than 1,000 children and further embedding Gaelic Games within local communities.
 

Produced in collaboration with Self Help Africa, the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) and Warriors for Humanity, the documentary highlights the profound social impact of sport as a vehicle for connection, empowerment, and long-term development.
 

While the GAA remains firmly rooted in Irish identity, Plant the Planet – GAA in Uganda demonstrates how its spirit has travelled far beyond Ireland’s shores, fostering belonging, inspiring communities and building a shared global culture through sport.
