An tOireachtas, in conjunction with media partner, TG4, today (Friday, 9 June 2017) announced a new addition to the regular TG4 live broadcast schedule from the annual Oireachtas na Samhna festival.  The new young peoples’ programme, Lár Stáitse will feature the traditional oral arts as Gaeilge, spotlighting the agallamh beirte (dialogue in verse)  from the oral tradition.  The Agallamh Beirte final in the 12-15 competition age-group will be broadcast live and the programme will also include winning performances from other junior competitions (storytelling, recitations & lúibíní (traditional rhyming dialogue).

“The partnership with TG4 has enabled us to present performances and events from Oireachtas na Samhna to audiences far beyond the conventional reach of the festival”, siad Liam Ó Maolaodha, National Director of An tOireachtas, “and we welcome the increased focus on the participation of young people. The traditional oral arts constitute an intrinsic part of the Irish culture, language and heritage and also serve as an important vehicle to demonstrate the linguistic richness of the Irish language.”

“This is a very welcome addition to our channel’s already extensive coverage of Oireachtas na Gaeilge,” said Alan Esslemont, Ardstiúrthóir TG4. “The talent, energy and vibrancy that is evident in all the young peoples’ competitions at the Oireachtas every year is wonderful to experience,” he added “ and we are delighted to be able to bring that to the screen in our TV and on-line coverage which will available worldwide.”

Lár Stáitse  will be broadcast on TG4 on Friday, 3 November 2017, from 8.00-9.30 p.m.

Other live broadcasts by TG4 from Oireachtas na Samhna include Nuacht TG4  on three consecutive evenings  (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) and  Steip,  the sean-nós dancing finals,  on the Saturday. Events  to be live-streamed by TG4 include the Official Opening of the festival (Wednesday); the Oireachtas Media Awards Gala Evening (Wednesday) and a number of the adult  sean-nós, performing  and arts competitions  (Thursday, Friday & Saturday).

The 2017 Oireachtas na Samhna festival will be held in Killarney, Co. Kerry, from Wednesday – Sunday 1 – 5 November 2017.
