TG4 hosted a major European conference on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Galway on 6–7 May 2026, bringing public service media leaders, regulators and community voices together to tackle some of the biggest inclusion challenges facing broadcasters today.

Hosted at The Portershed, Galway, in collaboration with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the two-day conference will examine how media organisations can better reflect modern Europe, from minority language access and inclusive recruitment to LGBTQ+ representation, migration reporting and disability inclusion.

Rónán Ó Domhnaill, Media Development Commissioner at Coimisiún na Meán, opened the conference, with a keynote address outlining how diversity and inclusion is a strategic priority for Ireland’s media and online safety regulator.

Deirdre Ní Choistín, Director General of TG4, discussed the key role TG4 plays in ensuring linguistic diversity and pluralism in Ireland’s ever changing media landscape.

Anne Richardson, Senior Project Manager at the EBU, who oversees the organisation’s DEI working group who run the conference said, “This event is a unique opportunity for public broadcasters around Europe to share best practices and collaborate on DEI strategies and initiatives. During this meeting, we can advance collective thinking on emerging issues and how we can learn from others’ experiences.”

As Ireland’s Irish-language public service media organisation, TG4 will use the event to highlight the role of minority language media in serving diverse communities and ensuring underrepresented voices are heard.

Conference co-organiser Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, Director of Innovation, Sustainability & Sectoral Capacity at TG4 said:
“TG4 are incredibly proud to host such an important event here in Galway. At a time when DEI initiatives are under immense pressure globally, it’s more important than ever that Public Service Media (PSM) continues to prioritise these issues on screen and off. This conference is about showcasing the amazing work our PSM’s are doing across the world, to highlight the challenges we all face and work together to create a better more inclusive world for all of us.”

The conference featured contributions from public service media organisations including TG4, RTÉ, Swedish Radio, ARD/SWR, Czech Radio, RTVE, S4C, NTR, Czech TV, VRT, WDR and LSM Latvia.

Local and community perspectives were central to the programme, with speakers from Galway City Partnership, Galway Traveller Movement, Football Supporters Europe and Youthwork Ireland Galway.

Key sessions focused on:

  • DEI strategies in public service media amid budget and political pressures
  • Inclusive recruitment and widening access to media careers
  • Minority language access and the role of AI
  • LGBTQ+ representation and media initiatives
  • Reporting on migration without fuelling polarisation
  • Future DEI collaboration across the EBU network

The programme also included a visit to the University of Galway, hosted by the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies, and a practical workshop on reporting migration led by Zbyszek Zalinski, Head of DEI at RTÉ.

The conference concluded on 7 May with a discussion on future priorities and collaborations across the EBU network.
